When someone with diabetes becomes unresponsive, the first priority is to protect the airway and monitor their condition. Place them on their side in the recovery position to keep the airway clear and reduce the risk of choking if they vomit, while you watch for any changes in breathing or consciousness. Giving sugar by mouth isn’t appropriate while they’re unresponsive because they could aspirate or choke, and you can’t be sure they can swallow safely. Administering insulin is not something you should do in this situation, unless you are trained and it’s specifically directed by a medical plan, because it could cause harm. Act quickly to call emergency services so they can provide or direct appropriate treatment. If the person regains consciousness and can swallow, you may offer a fast-acting carbohydrate, but not while they remain unconscious.
